Corey Haim passed yesterday

h1 March 11th, 2010

Corey Haim passed away yesterday due to an apparent overdose, he was 38.  His career was nuts in the 80’s, such as Lucas with Winona Ryder and Charlie Sheen, Murphy’s Romance with Sally Field, The Lost Boys with Kiefer Sutherland, License to Drive and Dream a Little Dream with Corey Feldman. He later joined Corey Feldman in a reality show The Two Coreys in 2008.

Our sympathy goes out to his family, friends and fans.

Well Howdy Friends!

I realized this morning that March snuck up on me…

Our next Disneyland Resort Outing will start near DCA, its been a while and I am jonesing for some good time spent in DCA. I plan on starting the day on GRR, I always have a great laugh on that attraction. And i am usually soaked.

It will be exciting to see the Paradise Pier Lagoon filled. Unfortunatly the World of Color will not be open yet… Maybe in time for the 1 year anniversary trip.

Captain Eo is now open in Disneyland and it is getting raves.

Because we will be so close to the Grand California Hotel & Spa , and we all love those nachos I am going to have us meet at White Water Snacks at 1400. I plan on eating my nachos and getting started around 1430.

As always, this is a no itinerary, come as you want event. You are welcome to grab a bite to eat or not, stay with the group, if there is one, or split off, you are free to do as you wish.

The park hours for the Resort on 3/14/10:
8am to 12pm for Disneyland
9am to 10pm for California Adventure.

AP Blackouts:
The California Select passport is blacked out :(

Closed for Refurbishments:
Mark Twain Riverboat
Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
Sailing Ship Columbia
Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes
Orange Stinger Conversion to Silly Symphony Swings
Golden Zephyr

I am looking forward to seeing all of you there.

I have added Kuma at the Parks to the twitter verse.

Please follow KUMAattheDLR on Twitter, if you want to keep updated on where we are or where we are heading.

Please feel free to invite loved ones and friends along. The more the merrier.

CAPTAIN EO Tribute Review 2010

h1 March 7th, 2010
DISNEY037.jpg picture by rickamortis-pics
BY Rick A Mortis

Disneyland’s Tomorrowland has just brought back Captain EO which opened in 1986. The Anaheim park is the only Disney park showing the film.

So here are my thoughts about the film, yeah it is dated but still holds up. The music and dancing is a gnarly flashback to the 80’s. The hair and costumes are rad! It’s like TRON and Flashdance had babies. The special effects all look rather well when compared to some of the way overally CGI effects of today. My only minor gripe and maybe it’s only because I am older but there are tons of editing errors. My favorite is the disappearing and reappearing Fuzzball game.

So what is is like to see the movie? The new neon sign out front is a nice upgrade from what I can remember of the original. The building got some much needed painting to the purple of the original. The queue has new lighting and snazzy flat screens are a sweet upgrade. Yellow 3-D glasses left over from Honey I Shrunk The Audience AKA HISTA are reused here, sorry no purple kids. The original chimes and twinkles futuristic music from before can be heard while waiting.  A updated version of the Captain EO logo can be seen on the overhead screen in the que. At the six minute mark a new Kodak commercial runs on the screens. Next they run the full behind the scenes pre-show trailer from the past, which is way cool. Look for more big hair, leotards, leg warmers, that blond chick that must have been someone girlfriend at the time, the CAT’S T shirt, Coppola looks the same, Lucas all young and stuff.

The doors open with the space sounds of Captain EO.

The movie begins and although the stars on the screen become three dimensional, the once awesome star field that appeared and set you out into space is gone. Also the theater laser effects are missing as well. I was disappointed by both. I think the laser effects would be the easiest effect to bring back.

To replace the effects that have been lost, the newer Honey I Shrunk The Audience AKA HISTA effects are used to enhance the show. Wind effects are used from HISTA as well as the  motion seats are used in scenes such as in the space battle and then to the beat of the music. The later does not work very well, the beats are a bit off. I had one screening in which the motion seats did not kick on during the music dance sequence and it was a bit better.

My biggest and major issue is the press release from Disney saying that this is a  new 70mm print. A simple fact is that reprint of a negative is different from a restoration of a negative. This appears to be a brand new copy of the film. But the film that was use to make this reprint has very noticeable specs of dust and blotches. Also the color timing is off such as some blacks looking more blue in tint.

Finally the ghosting can be really bad, side view seats and front rows are the worst.

Ok I am done complaining. What can I say about the film? Simply put every screening I have attended and once the movie ends, everyone cheers and good majority will stand up to give the film a standing ovation.

Thank you Disneyland for the Blast From the Past.
