While on a smaller scale then the San Diego Comic Con this event was put together well. The location spot did suck a bit since it was at the very end of the convention building in Anaheim. I do like the Anaheim Convention Center space, this was a great space for the Disney D 23 Convention and would like to see the Wizard World Comic Con to expand into the large hall. The vendors where varied and there was some cool free stuff to be had as well. A nice amount of people where in costume as well. The panels where located in the same building at the opposite end, which sucked a bit as well. The panels though where actually rather well attended, funny, and insightful.
On Saturday we hit a majority of panels on April 17, here are some highlights:
Superman Panel: Featured lots of Marlon Brando impressions, for awhile the studio wanted a big name as Superman and even considered Robert Redford who declined, they then started looking for supporting roles with a big name and once Brando signed on as a big name and then Gene Hackman signed on as Lex Luthor, how they thought Christopher Reeve was perfect as Clark Kent but was too skinny for Superman, Once Christopher Reeve did get hired on they had no problems with him and he was very personal and would hang out with the crew. Brando and his strange unintelligible requests for green muffins ended the panel.
William Shatner panel: Mother’s breast…it’s just good to know it’s there, the Olympics teleprompter that almost failed, Shit My Father Says coming to CBS plug, Escaping the volcano, Priceline plug, Aftermath Shatner’s plug for his showing coming soon, Invasion Iowa in Riverside and the blessing with a possum penis bone and the pissed of pig lifter after being punked, James Spader and Shatner’s bromance and Shatner’s love of playing pranks on Spader such as Vaseline on drinking glasses, How much fun he had as a villain on Columbo, Tarantula movie and how these choose the actresses to be in the movie by picking up ones from a boxes and also the crew would glue tarantulas to Shatner - “It was like a Tribble Goldilocks was stuck on my face”, final plug for a documentary called Gonzo Ballet.
Batman - The Television Show Reunion panel: Burt Ward aka Robin set the tone by addressing the camp factor of the show and the motto they had on set “Put on your tights, to put on the world”, Random thought by me Burt Ward still sounds like Robin…trippy, Yvonne as Batgirl said it was easy to stay in character since they where both so alike, Lee Merryweather as Catwoman got the part in the movie and the TV show by showing up to the audition and curling up in a chair and licking herself, Adam West as Batman flexed and asked for everyone to admire his physic, George Barris the man responsible for the Batmobile was inspired by the words “POW” & “BANG”, Burt Ward talked about his rescue center for dogs, Adam West plugged his DVD Adam West Naked, racy comments form girls and we get this nugget from Adam West “Lions, tigers, and cougars”, favorite line from Burt Ward “Holy something”, Julie Newmar “Careful everyone one of them has a mother”, Burt Ward trained with Bruce Lee, Yvonne thought her theme song was dumb but she loved her batcycle, prop master had a dod aka day of dent for Yvonne’s bike to her defense they removed the shocks so it would look better, Lee Merryweather is response to a question about being sexy “We where all fast for the day”, Julie on her costume being sexy “they melted black licorice for my costume, actually I took it home and altered it with seams in all the right places to show the curves”, Adam West favorite line “To the Batmobile”, Julie Newmar plugs her book shes working on about fantasies and is seeking submissions - please keep it PG and her site is www.julienewmarwrites.com, Adam West then asked Julie if she got the page he sent and Julie said “I did and it was blank and had wet spots on it, so it had to be from you Adam”, A common question was when will the show hit DVD and Batman is not released yet due to licensing rights, The casts favorite guest stars are Betty White - Talleuhah Bankhead - Sammy Davis Jr., Adam West sang and danced a small bit of the Bat Tootsie for a fan, Lee and Julie loved being femme fatales, a fan then gave reproductions to Burt and Adam of their busts on a small scale.

I checked out the first ever Disney Expo on Saturday September 12 and my first thought was uhhh where’s the people? I think a major factor in the low attendance was due to the very insane ticket price for general admission of $37.00. Food prices was also a bit high as well at the convention and really was standard con food with Disneyfied names. We did beat the system and parked at Disneyland versus the parking cost for the Anaheim Convention Center. Admission was fast since I had purchased tickets online. It was strange that they only had wrist bands for the convention. I guess I am used to wearing a badge around my neck and also maybe a wristband. Ok end of that ramble.
Saw tons of cool stuff such as exhibits, auctions, huge vendors floor, sneak peaks and upcoming projects such as Alice in Wonderland, TRON, The Princess And The Frog, The Muppets, Disneyland, Disney’s California Adventure
As I mentioned since the turn out was not as huge as expected at times spots were a bit dead at D23. We attended only attended two of the programs that day:
12:30 p.m. The Science of Imagineering
Wizards from Walt Disney Imagineering, including Asa Kalama, host of the Disney Educational Productions series The Science of Disney Imagineering, take us behind the scenes. Asa is assisted by a panel of Walt Disney Imagineering Technical staff.
If your a big Disney geek like me and like to know how things work this was your program. Lot’s of cool demos to be had. There was a special Haunted Mansion section that featured an eerie whispering effect. Best of all a free DVD for the series of The Science of Disney Imagineering was given out to audience members at the end of the program.
5:30 p.m. Lost Chords - Never-Heard Music from Disney Animation with Russell Schroeder
Using archival artwork, live performances by current Disney employees under the musical direction of Alexander Rannie and a special appearance by members of the Disney Employee Choir under the direction of Jim Wilber, Disney’s Lost Chords looks at the essential role that songwriting plays in the creation of Disney films.
Pure coolness for me again. A program was given out and we got to hear lost songs from Disney’s animated movies. Who knew Maleficent was such a singer? Great program and kudos by the Disney choir. You all deserved the standing ovation.
We had planned to end the night by watching Sleeping Beauty on the big screen at the con, but after sitting in the folding chairs provided for the panels we decided against it.
The staff that was mostly Disney cast members all rocked. For a first year convention there didn’t appear to be too many issues. I did hear that some rooms did fill up fast for other panels while some panels had little drawn were in large halls. I guess this is just growing pains and also some corporate power struggle in some departments. I hope next year D23 will come back bigger and better and hopefully cheaper.

So Saturday night as we planned our last day Doctor Poo confessed that she was worried about getting into the Doctor Who panel to see David Tennet. Me being a good friend decided we’d go back to the hotel, shower and camp out for Ballroom 20. We got in line about 2 AM…yeah concrete is not comfortable. I told Doctor Poo to go sleep in the Tardis aka the car while I waited in line since she was the one that needed sleep and was driving. The good thing about being early is we got to know a bunch of cool people in line. After a scary moment after some line confusion for Ballroom 20 the very cool fan group Whedonopolis.com who was there to promote their screening of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode “Once More With Feeling” that ends the Comic Con treated everyone in line to baked goods, coffee and a general feeling of well being and dorky commanderie. You guys rock. Check out the charity events they run: www.Whedonopolis.com

10:00-11:00 Dr. Who — Actor David Tennant, writer/executive producer Russell T Davies, director Euros Lyn, and executive producer Julie Gardner discuss their creative process and experiences working on BBC America’s Doctor Who—television’s longest-running sci-fi series—with exclusive clips and a Q&A session. Ballroom 20
This panel was a great treat and was way worth the sore muscles and lack of sleep. I think they where blown away how many people are into the show, love us some BBC around here. Russell T Davies is so awesome and we will miss your work on this show. Russell T Davies was also awarded the Gunniess World Record for longest sci-fi show on the air. Euros Lyn had a great time fielding questions from the audience. David Tennant had a good time answering questions as well while he rocked his bedazzled stormtrooper shirt. Several people went nuts when David Tennant walked out on stage. Julie Gardner was shooting footage from Comic Con from this panel so that will be included in the final season. So look for my mug to pop up there somewhere. They did show the final episode trailer and damn it’s amazing. I could give away some spoilers but really I am evil like a Dalek today so mums the word. David Tennet we will miss you and you’ll be our first Doctor here on The B Side!

Disney went all Hulk like and purchased Marvel Entertainment for an estimated $4 billion last Monday. This is some craziness if you consider the film, television, products, and even theme parks with over 5,000 characters to add to the Disney fold. Can this be good or bad for both companies. I am not sure. The purist in me wants Disney to leave the super heroes alone. The other side is hmmmm they might be able to do some cool stuff here. I wonder what this means for Universal’s theme parks that feature the Marvel characters. Universal states that it is covered for use of the characters. But I wonder how long of a license they have? Also what does this mean for the future Spiderman movie? Some interesting things to think about. If anything this is great for Stan Lee.

Another day of madness! We got up super early and waited in line for the dreaded Hall H about 7 AM for the LOST panel. Yeah it was a long wait but we talked to some cool peeps in line. We also talked about the infamous day of Twilight Thursday and the lameness of it all. Anyways here are a few pics while we waited outside. Thankfully we got in around 10 and the weather outside was a bit foggy.

11:00-12:00 Lost: The Final Season Begins, with Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse— In appreciation of all the fan support through five seasons of Lost, co-creator/executive producer Damon Lindelof and executive producer Carlton Cuse will pay homage to all the fans at their final Comic-Con appearance for Lost. Questions will be answered. Fun will be had. And you won’t want to miss the surprises in store for the audience! Hall H
The good thing about Hall H is that is crazy huge. The bad it is really hard to get close to the stage. We got into the front section in back row in the middle and a good view of the stage and screen. We also picked up a poster with LOST the final season on it. Hall H while huge also has another drawback. Once in here you are doomed. Doomed I say because there is no way to escape. The bathrooms are inside the Hall and there are food stands as well in a enclosed area for the Hall. Anyways I would call this panel LOST the comedy sketch. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse started the program witha bit about keys and the last pages of LOST. We learned only a few tid bits that this season will told in a different way and that old characters will be returning. We had in audience asking questions Jorge Garcia - Hurley and Michael Emerson as Ben. There was also a secret prize awarded to a lucky audience member for saying Claire’s name the award was a wooden sea gull from the show. Nestor Carbonell did a funny bit on applying manscara and came out on the panel. Josh Holloway as Sawyer got lots of girls screaming when he came out for the panel and he then proceeded to torture the writer to find out the about the final page of the final episode of LOST after a great bit Michael Emerson read the pages and we learned that Sylar was in a burning circus tent…after reading this Michael Emerson stated in a dead pan way “as what the hell is this shit?” and it brought done the house in laughter. The panel ended with a tribute to all the character that have been bumped off. Interesting point is that Locke was not shown. Also a big surprise was that Dominic Monaghan - Charlie was on stage when the lights turn on. Apparently he had a message on his palm in which we did not see. That was the end of the panel so he waved and joined the cast and it was over. Great way to end the panel.
